## What Reefer Madness is
*Reefer Madness: The Musical* is a satire of the 1936 anti-cannabis propaganda
film of the same name. Book and lyrics by Kevin Murphy, book and music by Dan
Studney. It premiered in Los Angeles in 1998 and has since been produced
off-Broadway and by regional, community and school theatres worldwide.
**Please do not confuse it with the 1936 film.** The 1936 *Reefer Madness* is a
public-domain propaganda picture. The musical is a separate, copyrighted 1998
work that satirises it, and the 2005 film is an adaptation of the musical.

*Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical* premiered on Showtime on 16 April 2005.
Directed by Andy Fickman, written by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney.

A 25th-anniversary revival opened in Los Angeles on 30 May 2024, directed and
choreographed by Spencer Liff. It was extended beyond its planned eight-week
run due to demand.
